SAN CLEMENTE, CA — July 30, 2004 — After approximately six months of thorough DDR2 module testing with their KT-2 King Tiger Test System acquired in January, along with internal motherboard compatibility testing and participation in OEM validation programs, Legacy Electronics releases five configurations of their DDR2 DIMMs, SODIMMs and Mini-DIMMs to OEMs and distributors. Legacy's unique, patented BGA Canopy® stacking alternative technology is allowing Legacy to achieve a high-density DDR2 memory solution option in lower form factors that the competition does not offer.
"With the development of new high-speed, low power-consumption personal computers, servers and workstations, DDR2 demand is increasing, especially as chip-set development advances," says Legacy's Kelvin Marino, Director of Application Engineering and New Product Development, and active participant on JEDEC's ongoing standards committee.
Marino continued, "Legacy has invested in a Cadence design package, to insure proper simulation of new designs that require tight timing margins (i.e. operating cycle times of 3 nanoseconds or less). This allows us also to participate in development of DDR3 and the new next step."
JEDEC announced development of the SDRAM standard for DDR2 last year (JESD-79-2), which clarifies many of the compliance issues developers were facing, and many OEMs are now moving quickly forward with DDR2 integration into their own products. Jason Engle, President of Legacy Electronics, stated, "According to recent reports from IDC Corp's Worldwide Tracker Report, PCs and portables are projected to grow by just over 11 percent in 2004 and 2005, and the DDR2 demand is part of that."
The five DDR2 configurations available include:
Engle continued, "DDR2's lower operating voltage (1.8V versus DDR1s 2.5V) offers about 30% less power consumption per similar density and speed. On-Die Termination (ODT) allow system designers to program various values for data bus termination which allows for improved signal integrity that inherently increases system timing margins. We are currently engaging in a major chip manufacturer's self-validation program for DDR2 desktop platforms, as well as pursuing CMTL approval. DDR2 memory modules have a 1.8V notch location versus a 2.5 notch location, to avoid accidental insertion into the wrong motherboard."
Founded in 1993 and located among the new high-technology companies of South Orange County, California, Legacy Electronics is home of the patented Canopy® chip-stacking alternative, a three-dimensional printed circuit board subassembly and process technology. Legacy is an ISO 9001:2000 certified manufacturer, designer and tester of high-speed, high-density memory modules, printed circuit boards, and other computer products.
